Well, last month it was Marlborough NZ, and then I went out to lunch on a lovely sunny day overlooking the water in a romantic Italian village and we had arguably one of the best seabass and seafood dishes I've had.
The chef was Calabrian and he insisted on this wine to go with our fish.
It's from the Langhe in Piemonte and so I went with his choice, it didn't disappoint.
I have said that many Italian whites fail to excite me, with a few exceptions that I've written on here, Sicily, Piedmont, Lucca, and small estates in the Veneto.
Here's one that proves that the wines of Piemonte are exceptional. This was a 2007 Roddino Chardonnay from the Langhe Piemonte. Now if you've been reading this site, you know I'm fussy about Chardonnay, I come from a region the Cape that produces stunning Chardonnay affordably.
This wine is equal to the task at 12 euro.
Fresh notes of herb and fruit on the nose, not to grassy.
In the mouth this is a lovely full fruity Chardonnay with notes of vanilla, not as buttery as some but smooth and with a good finish.
